5 Time-Saving Beauty Hacks We Love, Part 1

Maybe you’ve overslept … again. Or you’re a chronic underestimator of time. Or it’s one of those times when you have to be gorgeous RIGHT NOW. When you’re in a time crunch for any reason, clever hair and makeup shortcuts can be your best friend.

We’ve polled the Scott J team and pulled together some tried-and-true, field-tested tips, hacks and products that can take care of beauty business in a flash. Here are five of our favorites – check back in a couple weeks for five more!

The Partial Wash
If the clock says “skip the suds” but your hair says “don’t even think about it,” consider a partial wash of your bangs and/or crown. Separate your bangs and the hair on top of your head with a clip and pull the rest into a ponytail. Wet your hands and add a dab of shampoo for greasy hair, or conditioner for dry hair. Run it through your fringe and crown, rinse, and quickly blow-dry just the top. Hit the rest of your hair with either a volumizing or moisturizing product, depending on texture. (We love Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic or Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil at this step).

The Dry Shampoo
When you seriously don’t even have the 5-10 minutes it takes to pull off the above, Aveda’s new Shampure Dry Shampoo is your go-to for fresh hair. Puff it into the roots and gently rub it in to absorb oil, add nice texture and grip, and smell divine. This product hasn’t been out for long, but already it’s played a clutch role in many a rushed New York morning.

The Quickie Cat Eye
This trick is not just good for those dashing out the door, but anyone with a less-than-steady hand, even at a slower pace. Use the straight edge of a credit card as a makeshift stencil to outline the shape of a perfect cat-eye.

The Two-Product Transformation

Here are the two items of makeup that can make you look 1000 times more put-together in one minute: Translucent face powder and a vivid red lip color (Our picks: Aveda’s Inner Light Mineral loose or pressed powders, and Aveda Uruku Lip Pigment in Maracuja). The powder absorbs shine and balances out the skin tone, and even if you’re wearing nothing else on your face, that crimson pout gives you the Coco Chanel, less-is-more effortless glamour vibe.

The Three-In-One Fabulous Face
One of our very favorite, can’t-live-without-it makeup items from Aveda is its Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisturizer. It’s a moisturizer, light foundation and SPF 15 sun shield all in one. As silky sheer as it is, it provides incredible coverage to even out skin tone.
