Just because school is (almost) back in session doesn’t mean summer is over. You still have plenty of warm days before the cold months arrive. But with the great weather comes details that can make styling difficult: humidity, sweating, and an agenda full of plans. You’re going to want to keep your hair off your face and find styles that can take you from beach or pool to cocktails.

Our stylists Misty from our Upper West Side salon & Jailee from our Upper East Side salon have provided some tips and tricks on how to style your hair in this heat without missing a beat.

Tip #1: Find your go-to summer style

It’s all about working with what you have! Embrace the texture the humidity gives you and when all else fails, keep your hair out of your face. “I’m always embracing my beach waves,” says Jailee. “Texture Tonic is my go-to for that undone beachy look. It will hold the style but also maintain its softness and shine.” For the perfect style to keep hair out of your face, Misty loves braids. “[Aveda’s] Confixor gel works wonders on damp hair before you braid, to keep all the layers from sticking out.”

Tip #2: Tame the Mane

It’s so easy to throw your hair up in a messy bun and call it a day—hey, you’re not wrong, but there are more options out there. Show the humidity who’s boss when you use the proper products and styles to beat frizz. “Rinseless Refresh is perfect for reviving the waves and taming frizz,” says Misty. For this reason too, Jailee swears by braids. ”Braids have always been my go-to to tame my unruly hair, but sometimes it leaves you with too many kinks. I will use the Rinseless Refresh on areas that look slightly too kinky; then for some frizz control, some Light Elements Defining Whip twisted throughout. Then some Texture Tonic to finish it off.”

Tip #3: Know What Works Best For Your Hair Type

Everyone’s hair is different, which means your hair type will respond better to certain products than others. It’s important to the ones that address your hair concerns and work well with the kind of hair you have. Misty and Jailee break down their suggested products by hair type:

Tip #4: Embrace No-Wash Days

Aveda’s Rinsless Refresh cleanses the scalp and refreshes hair and texture with no-rinse micellar technology. For your no-wash days, it’s perfect for wavy to coily textures and for those who don’t like using dry shampoo, but need a second-day-hair refresher. “It’s great to freshen curls and waves and also tames frizz,” says Misty. Jailee loves it for its multi-purpose, on-the-go properties. “I love Rinseless Refresh after the gym year-round, but it takes it to a whole new level after you spend the day at the beach and are off to your next adventure.”

Tip #5: Protect & Smooth

If we were to really boil down what the most important things for summer hair, it would come down to two things: protection and smoothing. Protection from the sun is key, for both your skin and hair. “[Aveda] Sun Care products are my favorite! The hair and body cleanser removes chlorine and salt and the Sun Care Veil is a great protection from the sun and UV filters will protect your color,” says Misty. Jailee suggests, “Smooth Infusion masque for extra frizz control and moisture, and also Texture Tonic to show off the beach hair.”

Now that you’ve been schooled on everything you need for your hair to survive the remainder of the summer, you can go bask in the sun knowing it’s protected, frizz-free and looking fly!
