A Shore Plan: Care For Your Hair Before, During And After A Beach Trip

You’re planning a beach vacation capsule wardrobe, scheduling the requisite bikini wax and counting down the days until your escape. But how to ensure this much-needed tropical sojourn is a balm for your tresses as well as your soul? It’s sad but true that between sun exposure, salt water and chlorine, your trip can be rough on your hair. But you can make sure both you and your tresses come back looking and feeling restored.

DON’T ROCK THE BOAT
While breaks from routine are welcome when you’re perpetually overworked, they’re not so great for your hair. Whether your strands are dry, color-treated, damaged or thin, they thrive on consistency. The solution: snag travel-sized versions of your preferred Aveda products. The Dry Remedy, Damage Remedy, Color Conserve, Pure Abundance, Smooth Infusion, Be Curly, Rosemary Mint, Aveda Men Pure-Formance, Shampure, Invati and Invati Men lines are all available in petite (and TSA-friendly) 1.7-ounce bottles. This will also save you from trying the free shampoo and conditioner in your hotel bathroom—no matter how good they smell, do not give in to temptation! Chances are, they’re a sulfate-laden ticket to full hair freakout mode. (And Aveda smells better, anyway.)

GIVE YOUR HAIR TIME OFF, TOO
Since you’ll be lounging on the beach or by the pool, why not give your hair a break? Leave the blow dryers and other heat styling tools at home, and let hair air-dry. Slather on the morikue protein-rich Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque after a day in the sun. It helps restore weakened hair, thanks to tamanu oil and coconut oil—which penetrate the hair shaft, strengthening and restoring it from the inside out.

ROCK AN UPDO
When the heat and humidity rise, you’ll want to get your hair off your neck…fast. A pretty updo is the perfect solution and requires only a few bobby pins. This simple twist takes less than a minute to execute and works on wet or dry hair. Slip in a fresh flower or hair accessory for extra impact. Best of all? When you take it down, you’re left with loose, tousled waves. It’s the stuff #mermaidhair selfie fanatics dream of.

DON’T FORGET PROTECTION
SPF protection, that is. You know better than to risk skin cancer by going out in the sun without it, but your hair needs TLC, too. Spritz your mane with Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, a lightweight, water-resistant mist that protects hair from sun damage, color fading and dryness.

MITIGATE CHLORINE & SALT WATER DAMAGE
Hair soaks up water like a sponge—which means if you pre-rinse it before taking a dip, it won’t be able to absorb as much salt water or chlorinated pool water as it would if it were dry. So hit the showers before you take the plunge, and don’t forget to rinse off post-swim. Gently remove chlorine and salt from head to toe with Sun Care Hair & Body Cleanser. Rinse, towel dry, and work in Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, a leave-in treatment that strengthens hair with quinoa protein.
