The staff members are courteous, professional, & TALENTED. I will definitely be back, and have already recommended Scott J to my friends. -samb
Such great service! I love my haircut--Pam is really wonderful :) I definitely recommend her! -sabrinap
Michelle as always is outstanding, there's really no other hair expert I'd go to in the whole of NY :) -anonymous
Oxana was great - knew just what to do with my hair and took extra time to make sure everything looked right. The whole process was speedy, but not so fast that you felt rushed -- just perfect for a quick and well-done cut. -jaec
My stylist, Anjelica, takes the time to talk to talk to me about my hair and my style and color preferences. She is friendly and professional every time I see her.She also does an excellent job helping me look my best!!
I had one of the best salon experience of my life. The hair stylist I was paired with was Lexi and she is amazing. She took the time out to listen to me and understand what i was looking for in terms of a transformational look. She was very professional but still made me feel comfortable as if I've known her before. Lexi made the coloring process smooth and easy. I love my new hair color. When i stepped out of the chair I felt beautiful. I highly recommend this salon and ofcourse Lexi.. she's awesome! Thanks Lexi!
This was my first time at this salon. Clarke was my hairstylist. She was very professional, listened to what I wanted, looked at the photos I brought and really GOT what I was asking for. Thank you Clarke. Everyone was friendly and protocols adhered to for styling under COVID-19. I will return.
I got a wonderful haircut from Clarke at the Morningside Heights location - she looked at the photos I brought as examples of the cut I was going for, then cut and styled my hair to look exactly like the photos, but even better. She was lovely to speak with, and gave me excellent styling and blowdrying tips. The salon is strictly adhering to covid protocols, and the entire space was clean and welcoming. I look forward to returning for all my future cuts.
They are really nice and it is a good mid range salon. I have been a few times before and would probably go again. I am a bit disappointed because I showed the stylist multiple photos of which length hair I wanted, while also discussing this with him or her, and the front length ended up being considerably shorter than what I had indicated or asked for. It doesn’t look bad; it’s just not what I asked for and the error was I think more a matter of mild negligence rather than normal disappointment about the results as it is really quite easy to just not cut off a huge amount of hair all at once in the front when your client has told you what length he wants.
I will start by saying that I am very particular about my bangs.I had an appointment with Gia for the first time. I asked for a cut and layers / style. I showed her pictures of what I like and she gave suggestions and we came to an agreement. She washed my hair, conditioned it, and gave me a nice shoulder and neck rub.My previous stylist used to part my hair how I do before cutting it wet, so it made me nervous when Gia cut my hair with the part down the middle. Then I became upset when she blow-dried my hair parted down the middle, so my bangs were separated, flopped on either side. I don’t like that, because once my hair dries in the middle part, my bangs don’t cooperate to the side anymore. So I was visibly annoyed then. She finished drying and tried to show me my completed hair - still with the bangs parted down the middle. I almost lost it.Then she tried to comb them (bangs) over and trim them, and they pretty much cooperated, but they didn’t look how you want your bangs to look when you leave the hairdresser. She finished up and I tried to keep my cool (but failed - sorry, Gia) and paid and left.I got home and fixed my bangs, but overall the cut was great. Pretty much exactly what I wanted.Moral of the story: I’m a control freak, but Gia did a great jobTLDR: Gia is great. If you’re particular about something, tell her in the beginning.
It was really amazing experience in this salon.I got a hair cut from Gia. She is so nice and professional. She exactly knew what I want. It was the first time visitting hair salon in NYC and I totally satisfied. other staffs are also very kind.
*UPDATE*The general manager Robert Hitchcock emailed me immediately and offered a credit at any location to get my hair fixed with a senior stylist. I ended up going to the UES location so he recommended TARA. She IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy with my hair. We cut it pixie short and she got all the yellow, green, purple out of my hair with no burning! She is so talented! Robert was so professional and quickly responded to email. I am so grateful I have a new stylist in Tara. Thank you both!!!Very disappointed. I scheduled an appointment for a cut and single process. It turned into a double process, 6 hours, and $300.It was obvious the stylist, Gia, was NOT comfortable working with blondes. I needed to fix my roots, they had recently grown out very long and the rest of my hair was quite blonde. I had mentioned multiple times I don't like bright blonde, I like ash. She used bleach, didn't process it long enough and it came out yellow. So we did a second process, I was hopeful at this point that it would come out well. It was better than the yellow and good enough. At that point I was ready to get out of there. She had mentioned I should do partial highlights next time - good to know - but I'm not the expert and I did not recommend bleach in the first place. She did a nice, simple cutting of my ends. The more I look at my hair today in natural light, the more I realized how awful it looks. It is different bands of white and yellow.I understand blonde isn't easy but there was no discount and I was charged 2x more than I was initially quoted over the phone. It was never communicated to me how much more it would cost.I love Aveda salons, they are the only salons I go to but this was completely unacceptable. I wish I had been more vocal when I was there but didn't understand how bad it looked until the next day.
It was amazing. The workers are extremely kind, and provide you with answers and things you needIm so happy they did such a nice short haircut on thick hairMany places i went to couldnt do it to my hairAnd it was done for such a good priceIm happy i chose this place to cut my hair
This afternoon Onika trimmed my bangs-- she did an AMAZING job. She started out by asking me about what I wanted my bangs to look like, showed me how things looked after she did the first trim, and then made sure they were finished as I liked. She was super funny and made me feel very comfortable the whole time.
First time at Scott J Salon and I was very lucky to get the Amazing Clarke. I told her what I was looking to get with my hair and she got it right the way. Left very satisfied with my haircut and the treatment I got Definitely will come back. Thank you.
I love this place. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and it's a nice space without the pretension of other nice salons. I see Raphael regularly and he makes my hair look better than I could dream. I actually enjoy going there which is a first for any salon!
I got the most amazing cut from Carmen. I didn’t have to wait around for her, she took her time, and was very attentive to what I wanted. She was also very knowledgeable on the products she used, and explained why she used them on my hair. She made me feel like the products she used were customized for me. It was a wonderful experience, my search for a stylist is over.
Everyone I had the pleasure to meet at the salon today was delightful. The staff are warm, welcoming and professional. This was my first visit, but I was treated like an old friend. The young man who washed my hair and gave me a bit of a neck n shoulder has a magical touch. Gentle and calming. What a doll! Best and most importantly of all, Norman gave me a beautiful cut! It looks even better than I imagined. I will definitely be returning.
Claudia gave me an amazing haircut, not everyone can ✂ curly hair. Blow dry was something I never experienced before she didnt burn me or pull hard. Shampoo guy was so gentle, I didn't get soaked and great 💆. The eyebrow lady was out of this 🌎! Eyebrow massage , lavender scent and perfectly shaped eyebrows. Such a warming relaxing setup. The receptionist was wonderful and welcoming. I recommend this place to anyone. I will be returning in a couple of months though Im coming from PA.-Ruth Vasquez , Hanover twp, PA
I had virgin black hair when I first went in. I was scared of trying to do any type of color but someone had recommended this Scott J Aveda location. When I first arrived I was greeted and treated with such care. I was assigned with Hair technician : Clarke. She was amazing and very informative. She explain the product(s) that she would be using as well as how the outcome of the color would look and over time adjust to natural lighting. Second time around after a 6 month period I got my hair retouched and I decided to get my hair done with Clarke just because she knew my hair and how informative she was about my concerns. Second time around i fell in love with my color even more. Thanks Scott J & Clarke !
Clarke does it again. I brought my daughter for a fresh new cut and it is beautiful. As long as she is there I will continue to come to this Aveda. She absolutely loves it. Thank you so much! If you are in the area stop by and see her you will not regret it.
This place is lovely. They offer a complimentary beverage and brief massage. Jackie always gives me the perfect haircut and talks to me like an old friend. All of this for the lowest price available at an upscale salon. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have now come here every time I need a haircut for over a year. Jackie is a consistent presence in my life.
I received a great haircut from an excellent stylist. The space is clean and pleasant, and both the support staff and stylists are kind. I've been to other Scott J. locations and highly recommend this salon
I've been coming here for 4 years now, as it's the most convenient & reliable place in Morningside Heights. Overall I have had mostly great haircuts- I've had to get a couple touched up (my hair is difficult to get right), but I also made those appointments day-of and didn't pay attention to who the stylist was. If I did need it re-done, they were very accommodating and it was free. I recently splurged to go for a stylist in a higher price bracket (Juan) and had an excellent experience! Juan asked me about all of my worries with my hair (of which there are many) and gave me a great haircut to reduce the volume of my frizzy hair. Will definitely be going back to see him.
LOVE LOVE LOVE my stylist Rosey. My hair always looks on point, from the color to the cut. She's meticulous and likes to take her time. The products used here seem to be more gentle/better than other salons, I would definitely recommend it if you have sensitive scalp or damaged hair.On this latest trip, I had a half head of highlights done, an aline cut and some additional BRIGHT underlights (aka peekaboo highlights), It came out great - "professional with a touch of hidden fun".I come roughly once a year because it is pretty pricey but it's worth it and somehow the cuts/highlights grow out great too!Tips:- Book in advance, Fridays are usually pretty crazy- If you're getting coloring and have a sensitive scalp like me, hold off on washing your hair 1-2 days before your appointment and request that they sweetener like Splenda in your toner. This will alleviate some of the stinging/burning.
*Affordable luxury* ~ This petite, loft/studio version of the larger UWS Scott J location is exactly what I needed (for half the price of downtown). I've seen Pablo twice and definitely plan on coming back here instead of bouncing around between other places for any future hair needs.
The service here gets better every time I go in! Damaris gave me a great cut with lots of attention to detail. Everyone who works here is friendly, the products smell great, and the experience is relaxing. Also, they offer discounts on all products to Columbia University affiliates.
I have been having my hair colored by Carpio for about seven years now. He is absolutely wonderful. He does exactly what I want (base color with honey highlights) and always listens. The Aveda hair colors are gentle and seem to be good for my hair. Can't go wrong!
Overall, the staff is extremely friendly. I found it not always the easiest to relate to my haircutter what exactly I wanted, but that is not entirely their fault. I am very satisfied with my current haircutter who is both nice and great at what he does. My only criticism is that the staff are moved between locations, so I have had a haircutter that I go back to each time all of the sudden not be there.
I had heard the haircuts are a bit more expensive but it came out good. As a guy it was like 29 for me I think, 9 dollars more than usual for me, but worth a good haircut on short notice (called 2 hours before and got an appointment). The service was good all around; they give water, mini massage (awkward but nice, I always feel slightly anxious getting a new haircut), and very courteous staff. Karina did a great job.
I categorically disagree with all the reviews here! I come every 6 weeks-2 months for a creative cut and am always greeted by friendly, helpful staff. When I first came to the salon a year and a half ago, I got into the chair and essentially said, "Please do whatever you want." At first, my stylist Alyssa seemed skeptical, because that was not something she was used to hearing, but a short-haired musician in NYC needs to keep her image as fresh as the work she puts forth! This time was no different. I am a positive, creative person who looks forward to a haircut when I can afford it! I trust Alyssa's vision and decisions. She first buzzed the underside of one of the sides of my head - grade 3, we thought to go conservative before a grade 2 - and then I had a great wash by her assistant - Aveda products are aromatic and relaxing - concluded by a strong neck and shoulder massage. We chatted amicably while she cut my hair (I always take off my glasses and am essentially blind during the process), and she checked in with me during various stages in the process to make sure I was cool with the progress (which I was!). All in all, this particular experience was no different than all the others I have had at Scott J, which is why I return to this salon when I can! I doubt that any other salon with such affordable prices could give me as consistently creative an experience. One of the assistants stopped me before I left to tell me how much she liked my cut - she had watched Alyssa throughout the process. I emerged feeling braver and stronger-just the city attitude I need! Thanks, Scott J, and I'll see you all soon!
