FALL TRENDS THAT START IN THE SALON

Source: Aveda

This autumn, you might find yourself swimming in stacked kitten heels, piling on the plaid like a lumberjack with a Saks card, and finally learning to hold a latte in over-long sleeves. But even the Ittest of It Outfits requires a fashion-forward mannequin (that’s you) to take the look from simply stylish to positively Pinnable. The salon is where your fall style REALLY begins. Here are some fall styles worth calling out:

HAIR CUT: the Rocker Pixie

Make no mistake: this is no Peter Pan ‘do. These blunt, confidence-oozing cropped cuts temper the sweetness of the pixie with shaggy rock & roll texture. We’ve seen them on the runways at Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone, and on the red carpets atop Kate Mara and Lily Collins. Pro tip: a dollop of Aveda Light Elements Texturizing Crème can create the perfectly roughed-up pixie.

HAIR COLOR: Bronde

Yes, we know your Pinterest overflows with images of mermaid-hued hair, but for a more realistic (and equally on-trend) look, go bronde. This color technique combines brunette with blonde, blending rich darker tones with subtle light shimmers. Low maintenance, fashion forward and flattering — what’s not to love?

The key is to find YOUR bronde, as there is no one-shade-fits-all. Your skin, eyes and original hair color play a major role in deciding whether to go for a cool ash or a warm golden shade. Luckily, we’re all about creating custom color at Scott J.

HAIR STYLE: The Perfect Pony

Once a gym and lazy-day staple, the humble pony now reigns the runways. From decidedly slept-in at Miu Miu to sleek and sideswept at Dior, each iteration of the ponytail showed this classic style can be worn with literally everything. (Check out how Aveda’s Tippi Shorter created the twisted, undone “party pony” at the Latinista Spring/Summer 2016 show.)

We loved the slicked-back models’ manes at Carolina Herrera, secured with a metallic leather tie. To recreate, run a small amount of Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel throughout the hair by the crown of your head. Comb hair back and secure at the neck. Wrap with a ribbon, tie, or metal ponytail cuff.

HAIR STYLE PART 2: The Messy Updo

What we loved most about the parade of updos on Fall/ Winter runways is the fact that most of them can be recreated without advanced cosmetology training. Perfection is not the goal, which is good news for DIYers working in a bathroom mirror during a busy morning. Case in point: Isabel Marant’s finger-raked knots, Altuzarra’s done-up take on 2014’s wet look, and, our personal favorite, Vera Wang’s coolly casual swept-up twist.

To recreate, prep hair with Aveda Thickening Tonic. Add a touch of texture and lift at the roots with Control Paste, and sweep your hair into a twist or bun at the nape of your neck. Secure with your usual ratio of bobby pins to hair ties, and tell everyone you strutted right in from the runway.

BROWS: More Is More

Thanks to Cara Delevingne et al., bold brows blew up a while back and they’re not going anywhere this fall. If you weren’t blessed with naturally thick eyebrows, ask your colorist for a brow tint the next time you’re in. Or, embrace the art of brow shading. If you were, keeping them under control is your challenge. A spritz of Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hairspray on a brow brush will get the job done.

For any season, having fun with trends is what’s important, and learning how to adapt them to fit your personal style is key. Feeling stuck in a comfort zone? Come in and chat … we know just how to kick-start your fall style.
